I believe what people see, hear, and think about a brand is shaped by the environment around it. The category, the competition, the culture, and the expectations people bring with them all influence perception. Interpreting that context creates advantage. Design is the expression taken from that advantage.
That belief has shaped my entire career.
I’m Drew Dougherty, founder of Branding-X-Context (BXC) and NICELOGO, a senior-led brand strategy, naming, identity, and packaging design studio focused on consumer product and lifestyle brands across retail, DTC, and Amazon. I previously served as Global Creative Director at O’Neill and worked alongside national advertising agencies including FCB, Vitro, and DGWB. I’ve led brand design and product marketing initiatives ranging from global rebrands to startup launches.
I stay directly involved in the work. I’m not managing layers. I’m doing it. As strategist, creative director, and designer, I carry positioning through execution to ensure brands hold together in competitive markets. I came to California to work in the skate and surf industry and sold my Harley-Davidson to buy my first Mac, fully committing to building a career in brand and design. I still surf, bike, golf, and fish. I build surfboards and fins in my spare time. I’m a maker and a practitioner. That immersion shaped how I understand product, culture, and authenticity.
Most brand problems aren’t cosmetic. They’re structural. My role is to interpret context, simplify decisions, and build brand systems that perform on shelf, online, and in crowded marketplaces. This is important work. I operate in important moments.
